Yoshitsune #19: Protest Against Yoritomo 兄へ物申す
News of Gotari's death reaches Yoshitsune. He is very upset to learn of the deaths of his loved ones one after another. Gotari was like a brother to him, who looked out for him since he was a boy.
Back at the house, Jiro and the rest are all worried about Yoshitsune. He finally returns and tells them he is alright already.
Yoshitsune: "Please stop worrying about me."
Go-Shirakawa moves back to Kyoto after Kiyomori's death. He starts plotting to overthrow the Heike. He discusses with Tomoyasu and decides that Genji is the perfect candidate. But even within Genji, there are different factions. Yukiie, Yoshinaka and Yoritomo. They decide to make use of Yoritomo, since he is the eldest son from the main bloodline.
Yoritomo summons for Yoshitsune and introduces Minamoto no Yorinori to him. Yorinori is their half-brother, same father but different mother. They start talking about waging war and chasing the Heike out of the capital. (talk a lot about some battle strategy too but i dun understand...) Yoritomo declares (yet again) that Heike is going to fall without Kiyomori. Yoshitsune keeps quiet throughout the discussion and feels very uneasy.
Meanwhile in Kiso, Yoshinaka is also getting hyped up about waging war on the Heike. (He and his wife are war-crazy. And seems like he is operating separately from Yoritomo. Kinda competitive i would say.)
Yorinori visits Yoshitsune at his place. He asks about Yoshitsune's childhood and mother and wish he will get to meet his mother again. (Yorinori seems like a nice chap, not arrogant like Yoritomo. )
Tekona gets a job at the Heike's residence and is introduced to Tokiko. (Munemori then comes in and says something to Tokiko about Shirakawa, which i dun understand. Something about asking her to go meet him??)
Yoritomo sends a letter to Shirakawa. The letter states that it is not his wish to fight against the ex-emperor. His only enemy is the Heike. (Then i am not sure about this part, but i tink Yoritomo says something like, if Heike is willing to make peace with them, they can work out a way to co-exist without fighting... ehhh... like suddenly so different from what i would expect. Not sure if i misunderstood, or is this really what Yoritomo wants. Or maybe it's just a ploy of his.) Shirakawa says that if the 2 clans start fighting, it doesn't matter who win or lose, but it will definitely ruin the peace in the capital, which is something he doesn't want. Tomoyasu tells him not to worry, as Yoritomo doesn't really seem interested in capturing the capital. He already has his base at Kamakura afterall. Shirakawa is a bit relieved.
Tokiko calls on Shirakawa but he doesn't want to meet her and gets Tsubone to go instead. Tsubone lies to Tokiko that Shirakawa is not feeling well after the moving. Tomoyasu tells Tokiko about the letter from Yoritomo and that Yoritomo is interested to hold peace talks with the Heike. Tokiko is shocked.
Tokiko tells this news to her sons but Munemori and Shigemori are against it. Shigemori thinks that to commit to peace talks now will indicate that the Genki has grown too powerful for the Heike to control. As for Munemori, he is confident that if a war breaks out, Heike will win because Shirakawa is on their side, or so he thinks. He reminds the rest of their father's dying wish. Tokiko is worried, as chances to reconcile with Genji are ruined as a result of her lie.
A battle between the troops led by Koremori and Yukiie breaks out at Sunomata-gawa. The Heike manages win this battle but Yukiie escapes. Koremori and the rest are happy that they won the battle but Munemori is not satisfied and reproaches them for letting Yukiie survive. Tomomori thinks however, that chasing after Yukiie here will be a rash move. (Seems that Muemori is bent on wiping out every single Genji at the first opportunity. Maybe to prove his worth. *shrugs*)
Yukiie seeks refuge at Yoritomo's place after his defeat hoping to receive reinforcement but gets cold treatment from the latter. (Seems like Yoritomo criticise his battle antics which resulted in the humilating loss. He is also unwilling to help Yukiie launch another attack.) Yukiie is furious and storms off. He approaches Yoshitsune and complains to him.
Yukiie: "Aren't we all Genji? Isn't our common enemy the Heike? Shouldn't a Genji help his fellow Genji member??!"
Yoshitsune: "I believe Yoritomo has a bigger plan to deal with the Heike." (that is, instead of focusing too much time and resources on individual battles)
Yukiie then asks Yoshitsune if he is willing to join forces with him (and operate separately from Yoritomo). Yoshitsune refuses flatly and says he pledges allegiance to Yoritomo and Yoritomo only. He will never betray him. (He is not going to appreciate your efforts honey, go back to Hiraizumi already yo...)
Meanwhile, Yoshinaka wins a battle at Shinano despite a much smaller army. The Heike is concerned about Genji's expanding territory and appoints Fujiwara Hidehira to be the guardian of the Tohoku Region for them. (Cannot find a suitable word...)
As a result of this, 2 of Yoshitsune's kerai, Sato Tsugunobu and Sato Tadanobu are wrongly suspected as spies as they were (or rather, still are) from the Fujiwara clan. Not willing to be subjected to such rumours as well as not wanting to put Yoshitsune in a difficult position, they ask Yoshitsune for permission to leave. Yoshitsune walks off to look for Yoritomo without giving any answer.
Yoshitsune tells Yoritomo that he will not let the Sato brothers leave. He believes in them totally. Yoritomo reveals to him that the Heike has assigned Hidehira to guard the Tohoku region for them and Yoshitsune is shocked. However, he assures Yoritomo that Hidehira has no wish to put himself against the Genji. Having stayed with Hidehira for a long time, he retells how Hidehira once told him, he is not interested in war. He will only engage in one if his land and people are threatened. Moreover, he was the one who provided him and his kerai with horses and equipment and sent him off to reunite with Yoritomo. Thus, to Yoshitsune, the Sato brothers are "irreplaceable kerai". He will keep them no matter what, even if it means opposing Yoritomo's wishes.
After Yoshitsune leaves, Yoritomo tells Masako he finally understands what she meant previously when she said Yoshitsune has something that draws people to him. His single-mindedness is impressive. Masako reminds him however that this single-mindedness can also be scary (read dangerous).
Yoshitsune returns to his place and tells the Sato brothers he will not forgive them if they leave. Then in the most gentle tone, he asks them to stay with him. The Sato brothers weeps in gratitude while the rest cheers. (Sasuga Yoshitsune dane~)
