Yoshitsune #11: The Night Before The Storm 嵐の前夜

Yoshitsune searches for Yasuhiro through the night until dawn breaks. Suddenly he spots Yasuhiro's bow down a steep slope. Believing that he must be down there, Yoshitsune rides down the slope with Hakudouji and discovers Yasuhiro's saddle. Dashing down the slope somemore by himself, he finally finds a semi-conscious Yasuhiro collapsed by a tree.

Back at Fujiwara's residence, Hidehira reproaches Yoshitsune for his rash actions to search for Yasuhiro by himself in a forest that he is not familiar with. Yoshitsune asks for forgiveness. Some men ask how he managed to find Yasuhiro. Yoshitsune had believed that Yasuhiro must have left some markings behind when he realised he was getting lost, and true enough, he found cut marks on trees and followed them. He made use of the Polaris to get his compass directions in the foggy jungle. Then when he found Yasuhiro, he used wild plants around him as medicine to alleviate Yasuhiro's pain, something he learnt when he was in Kurama. Everyone (except maybe Kunihira??) is very impressed with Yoshitsune. "A Genji indeed", they say. As a token of gratitude, Hidehira presented Yoshitsune with a valuable sword and gave him a new house that is much nearer their own. .

Hidehira: "Although it was totally reckless on your part... well done!"

A few days later, Yoshitsune and his followers moved into the new house. All four of his followers also each receive a horse. Benkei is being teased by the other 3 because he has never rode a horse before.

One day, Ustubo and Yoshitsune are left in the house while the others go out to practise horse-riding. Utsubo tells Yoshitsune that she was really worried when he did not come back that night while looking for Yasuhiro. If he still did not return the following night, she would have gone into the jungle to look for him herself. She has decided, she will follow Yoshitsune and be of service to him for life to pay back for her brother's misdeed (the attempted assasination on Yoshitsune). Yoshitsune tells her to forget about that incident. She should instead think for herself, find her own path in life, to become someone's wife, to become a mother of her children...

Utsubo: "No... I just want to stay by your side forever..."
(Oooh... I believe this is a confession.)

Yoshitsune is shocked for words and goes back to chopping his firewood. Utsubo is kind of disappointed. Suddenly, one of Hidehira's men appears. The man is Igarame no Shichirou. He is impressed by Yoshitsune's bravery and wants to marry his daughter to him. Mistaking Utsubo as Yoshitsune's wife, Shichirou tells Yoshitsune that he doesn't mind if his daughter is the second wife. Yoshitsune tries to tell him that he is mistaken and declines his request.

That night, Saburo and the others gossip about the rumours spreading in the city that Utsubo is Yoshitsune's wife/woman. The other 3 question Kisanta if he knows whether Yoshitsune likes Utsubo. Kisanta replies Yoshitsune doesn't look upon Utsubo that way and then storms off. (Seems like Kisanta kinda like Utsubo himself.)

The next day, one of Hidehira's men Sato no Tadanobu charges into Yoshitsune's house demanding to know if Yoshitsune has fallen in love with Shichirou's daughter, that is why his own marriage proposal has been rejected. Tadanobu's elder brother Tsugunobu tries to stop him but the former is persistent. Yoshitsune replies he has never even seen the girl before, let alone like her. He tells Tadanobu that he is just a nobody now with no family and doesn't plan to get married at all. Hearing this, Tadanobu leaves with his brother.

Utsubo realises that her staying in Hiraizumi brings inconvenience to Yoshitsune and decides to return to the capital. She lies that she wants to go back to the capital because Hiraizumi is too boring for her. Yoshitsune sees through her lie of course. That night, he and Utsubo sits by the moonlight and chat. Utsubo confesses that she is leaving because she brings trouble to Yoshitsune, with all the rumours flying around about them. Yoshitsune apologises for not being able to do anything.

The next day, Utsubo bids a tearful farewell to the rest. As her boat sails away, she yells to Yoshitsune.

Utsubo: "You must come back to the capital someday!"

A few days later, Tadanobu visits again. He tells Yoshitsune that he just found out from Shichirou that he was rejected because his daughter already has someone else in her heart. Yoshitsune jokes that they both have no fate with that girl. The relationship between the 2 men grew stronger that day.

The Taira sent a messenger to tell the Fujiwaras to hand over Yoshitsune. Hidehira does not plan to of course. News of this reaches Yoritomo in Izu. He wonders what kind of a man Hidehira is, who dares to defy the Taira and probably the imperial family as well.

The year is now 1176. A banquet is held to celebrate the emperor's 50th birthday. Koremori and Sukemori performs the Seihaiha (???) dance as tribute to him. (which as usual is utterly BORING... once again, the dance music sounds.. the same as every other dance in the drama...-_ -) For a while, things in the capital seem peaceful but this is not to last.

Come July, the emperor's wife, Tokiko's sister passed away due to some illness.

(narration) In the following year, Shigemori and Munemori were made generals which angered the aristocrats. Then in April, a huge earthquake and several fires hit the capital. It is a period of high tension. Somewhere in Higashiyama Shishigatani, a meeting is held to formulate a plan to overthrow the Tairas.

Details of this meeting got to the ears of Kiyomori and he sets out to wipe out all the masterminds. But it turns out that among the revolutionists, are members related to the Heike family. (i tink one of them was Tsuneko, his wife's brother.) Shigemori pleads for mercy for his brother-in-law but Kiyomori insists that as long as people betray the Taira, they must die. If that is the case, Shigemori replies that the Emperor must die too, for he also participated in that secret meeting. Kiyomori is shocked. In the end, Kiyomori lets most of the rebels live, but have them exiled or sent to temples instead. No attempts are made to expose the emperor though.

Nonetheless, the emperor lives in constant fear of being assassinated by the Taira. (He has always act crazy, now he's worse!)

In August 1178, Tokuko returns to the Heike's Residence for her delivery. Tokiko tells Muneko that even if Tokuko gives birth to a girl, she will personally bring him up as a boy, even if that means deceiving the whole world.

The emperor visits one day to look in on Tokuko. Kiyomori shows him how the Taira ladies are making mud dolls to pray for a safe delivery for Tokuko. There is an obvious tension between Kiyomori and the emperor but both pretend nothing has happened.

Meanwhile in Hiraizumi, Yoshitsune continues to lead a peaceful life shielded away from all the unrest happening in the capital...
